OK, so why are we humans so fascinated with flight? Have you ever wished you could fly? Why? What would it mean if we could?
Can you name any books/stories you've read where a character flies? (Literally or figuratively?) I've read a couple of novels by James Patterson in which a doctor has figured out how to create children who will be born part-human and part-bird. While the children love the ability to fly, their situation is much like the one mentioned in the book--the ability to fly is what traps them. The whole world wants to study them, see them, put them on display. The ability prevents their freedom instead of giving it to them.

I think humans are so fascinated with flight because it is something that can expand the boundaries of the lives of humans. I have sometimes wished I could fly just to see what it's like above everyone I know. I think it would mean just one more thing that humans have accomplished throughout history. I have read a book, Stuck in Neutral, which is about a young boy who is completely paralyzed and can not live a normal because he can not even communicate with his own family. Sometimes, he has these seizures. When these occur he has an outer body experience, and at first he hates them because of the pain. Later, he realizes that he loves his seizures because he feels like he can fly, and like he is on top of the world.
ReplyDeleteI think humans are fascinated with things they know are impossible. I don't believe anyone will ever be able to fly on their own without a little help but I have wished I could fly. I mean, it would be so much easier-no traffic, speed limits, gas ect.-unless everyone could fly then it would be the same as driving and not as fun. If we could fly then things would be chaos because I'm not sure that they could put road signs and everything in the sky-or everyone would be hitting everyone and falling and then that definitely wouldn't be good.
ReplyDeleteI think people are so fascinated in flying because its something we just cant do. People always say Reach For The Stars or Think Beyond The Clouds...and flying just brings you to those limitations. It takes you to the heavens. On beautiful days or on sunset I would wish that I could fly into it, somewhere far far away. Too be alone and just be with my thoughts. If we could fly i think we would have nothing to hope for, because we would have ultimate freedom. At the moment I cant think of a book that involved fling.
ReplyDeleteI believe that people are so fascinated with the idea of flying or being able to fly because it is something that expands our boundaries or limitations. I have wished i could fly so i could go anywhere and not have to deal with traffic. The sight you get from flying is unbelievable and makes you feel like your unstoppable and free to go wherever you like. Freedom is the ultimate right that everyone loves to have and the idea of flying gives people the feeling that their free to go wherever. As corny as it sounds the only character i can honestly think of that has the ability to fly is tinkerbell. Haha
ReplyDeleteGrowing up watching superman, i have always wished i could fly. think of all of the money that you would save on traveling. It expands boundries, it would allow us to go places that we could never go to before. Even lands of war, we could just fly over and take a look. It would just make the human spirit feel free.
ReplyDeleteI think being able to fly is one of those things where we can't do it, so automatically we wish we could. Like you always want what you can't have? Yeah..one of those things. That's just human nature! I think being able to fly would mean going beyond the norm, beyond all the ordinary stuff that happens and just getting away. I would love to be able to fly, I mean the closest I've gotten would either be jumping off the rock cory or going somewhere in an airplane but it's not the same.
ReplyDeleteI think humans are fascinated with flight because its a magical experience. You always want what you cant have (in this case cant do) so naturally we would want to because of that reason but also because if we were to be able to it'd be a magical or supernatural experience and we are all pretty fascinated with the magical and supernatural. I also think we are because any person that can fly is either a super hero, angel, or magician all of which we look up to in some way. Be it saving peoples lives, being a holy figure or possessing the ability to makes things disappear. Those are the reason that i would like to be able to fly anyways because it'd make me superhuman. I've not really read any books where people could fly but a million well known books do. For instance harry potter can fly on his broom stick!
ReplyDeleteFascination with things that are impossible to people, thats where the want to fly, comes from. Sure it's one thing to be in a plane, but to be able to just float across the sky, feeling the wind in your hair, and not having to worry about if you are going to plumit to your death at any given moment, that is why I have wished before that I could fly, because I am incredible afraid of heights and afraid of being on a airplane and it crashing. If we could fly, there would be no need for airplanes or any flying trasportation. The only sort of literature I can think of that involves people flying would be Superman.
ReplyDeleteI believe humans are fascinated with flight, because they know they can't do it by themselves. If people could fly, then there would be no fascination over it and it would be like an everyday thing to anyone. I wish that i could fly because i could go anywhere i want to. If humans could fly it would mean that they could go anywhere and the possibilities are endless. I personally haven't read any books that contain any flight in them though.

Flight stretches the boundaries of our lives and make things more convenient. just think if we could fly without the use of airplanes or helicopters. Life would be much more easier than it is today. I cant think of any books ive read with people flying really. but maybe i will soon.
ReplyDeleteHuman are intrigued by things they can't do by themselves, flight being one of them. They need an airplane in order to fly. I have read a few books that have talked about flying, I can't name one off the top of my head.

ReplyDeletei believe that humans are fascinated with flight is because it is an ability we do not have. we are bound to the earth and that is something we want o overcome. if we could fly, i believe our lives would be much different in how we actually do things, but we would probly interact with each other very much the same as we already do.
ReplyDeletei think so many of us want to fly not just to have mere flight and venture to the skies but to escape to fade away from problems that we all endure here. many of us feel trapped so this is our way out.
