Chapter 18

Ok, this one is a free write. We haven't really read enough yet, so there hasn't been a story where someone gets wet or drowns.

Just comment on the chapter. What did you think? Do you think reading this book and hearing about things like the symbolic meanings of drowning and submersion will change the way you read?

  1. I always have trouble trying to figure out the symbolic meaning behind things. However, I do think that if someone went into the water one person and came out of the water changed that it was Baptism. However, if they just fell in the water and acted the same way before and after that nothing really changed and the character just fell in water. If they fell in water and drowned then something strange happened and i guess they were just meant to die.

  2. I used to never even think about symbolism in books when I read. I just thought that what was in front of you was the intentional meaning. As I get further in this book I realize that there are so many meanings and symbols that foreshadow or just explain situations more in depth that I have just skipped out on. Though, I have never read a book that included someone or something drowning or submersion but I do see how that can symbolize more than just you have read.

  3. Usually i don't get symbols until the end of a book and i really think about it. So i am like oh this means such an such or i get it now...Now, when books have drowning or swimming, i think of reborn, starting something new, or something along the lines of that. Water symbolizes a cleaning or a rinsing of the soul. So when I look for symbols, thats what I see when I read about water.

  4. Im the type of reader that picks up on things like symbols the second time i read something. Since i've been reading through this book i have learned alot about literature that i would of never learned on my own. There is so many different aspects, meanings, and symbols to literature. When i read about drowning or submersion in a story i usually get the idea that the author has a deeper meaning beyond why he/she put it in the story and i usually try to figure that out through a discussion between me and somebody else.

  5. I'm not very obsevant when it comes to symbols, which is something I should probably work on now that I'm in AP English. :) This book is sort of showing me that a pretty good portion of what we read has symbolism, so now as I start to read something new maybe it will be easier to pay attention to detail!

  6. I think the book is giving me a better idea of what to look for when I look for symbolism. I'm sure in numerous books I've read, or movies I've seen, have had more symbolism than what I actually saw. I'm interested to learn more about symbolism so I'll know what to look for as I read.

  8. Symbolism has always been an intersting way at looking at things for me. Drowning and submersion can symbolize a number of things now that i actually think about it, which i never really did before. This could help me pay attention to a book more and try to figure out the hidden meaning of evens rather than take it as i see it.

  9. Symbols are everywhere. I'm not so great about picking them out of a piece of literature, but I can do it. It's weird how things like a person drowning or not can mean a number of different things. That is exactly why I love seeing symbolism in literature, because it makes you think, and it keeps things interesting.

  10. I've never been able to see the symbols that are right in front of my face when i read books. I do think that symbols are easier to spot now that i've read most of this book and i not only can spot them but know what the meaing of meanings are. For instance like drowning in this chapter, i now know that when someone goes in water and comes out or doesn't that it can symbolized many different things. Water can be used to cleanse, purify, make someone reborn, etc. I once read somewhere that when you dream and in your dream your in water, like the ocean and cant get out or really whatever that subconciously your feeling unsure about something. So water could deffiently be used to symbolize someone being uneasy about something in literature as well.

  11. Im not always the best at recognizing symbols and stories, sometimes i have to read the same thing a few times to really understand it. I've only read one story where someone drowns and i dont think it had a special meaning to it except that someone died
